Forcing Someone Into Rehab
Question:
Can we force someone into going into an alcohol rehab facility? Will the rehabilitation center accept someone under these conditions?
Answer:
First answer is no, you cannot forcibly bring someone into any facility against their will. However, you can try reasoning with the person concerned. Or try an intervention with family and friends. But the person will have to comply.
Second answer is the court can order an individual to seek rehabilitation, often as part of a sentence. However, you will need to have a complaint to file a case, and during hearings, be able to show that the person is a danger to himself and others.
An example would be if you have an alcoholic brother who, during intoxication breaks some windows in your home. You can call the police and file charges and, chances are, alcohol rehab will be part of his sentence.
Barring any complaints, though, I doubt you can bring anyone against their will.
Additionally, the effectiveness of rehab may be doubtful when the individual himself is not interested in it. I’ve personally had drug addict friends who were shoved into rehab by their parents, finished their time there, and immediately went back to the habit as soon as they stepped out. It actually got worse because rehab got them a ton of new connections who were into the same troubles.
